Symphony No. 2 With Rugby, Arthur Honegger brings sport into the concert hall – not as a musical play protocol, but as a study in rhythm and timbre. "I love football," writes the composer, "but the wilder, less regulated rhythm of rugby excites me more." Honegger explicitly does not see the second of his three symphonic movements (1928) as program music, but as a symphonic translation of attacks and counterattacks, the movement energy of a game.
The tempo of the first half is maintained by Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor. His mentor Nikolai Rubinstein dismissed it in 1874 as "worthless and unplayable" – a verdict that deeply affected Tchaikovsky without convincing him otherwise. Today, the work is among the most performed in piano literature. After the intermission, Charles Ives' 2nd Symphony – Konstanz premiere, more than 120 years after its creation. Leonard Bernstein only brought the work out of the drawer in 1951 at Carnegie Hall. Ives, primarily a partner in one of the most successful New York life insurance agencies of his time, here assembles American folk songs, Stephen Foster melodies, and the hymn America (whose melody European ears know as God Save the King) confidently into the soundscape of European symphonics – Brahms, Bach, and Wagner included. Featuring Yoav Levanon (*2004), an exceptional talent who, despite his young age, already has an impressive career behind him. The pianist began his professional piano training at age three, performed in a concert for the first time at age four, and shortly thereafter won an international piano competition. At seven, he performed at Carnegie Hall in New York. Countless awards and performances on the biggest stages and at the most renowned festivals followed. Among other things, he performed as the youngest pianist ever at the Swiss Verbier Festival.
Yoav Levanon is taught by leading piano professors and musicians in Israel and abroad and is part of the Piano Program for Outstanding Young Pianists at the Jerusalem Music Center.
