Description

The moonlight and the darkness of the night have always inspired composers to create profound works with impressive, creative tension fields. Debussy's "Clair de lune" and Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" are probably the most popular, but not the only examples of how music makes polarities such as light and shadow, feeling and reason, femininity and masculinity immediately perceptible and experiencable. The Mannheim Institute for Medical Ethics, Psychotherapy, and Health Culture (IEPG) also addresses polarities in its winter semester 2026 – specifically the tension between science and art. As in October 2023, the IEPG and pianist Weronika Chodakowska will present a piano evening as the semester's opening, combining the semester theme with impressive piano music. Weronika Chodakowska is thus a guest on stage at Augustinum Heidelberg for the second time. In addition to the semester participants, all interested residents of Augustinum and guests are warmly welcome! The audience can look forward to an atmospherically dense, romantic program with music by Debussy, Chopin, and Beethoven. A special focus is also on works by Karol Mikuli (1821 - 1897) and Adolf Gutmann (1819 - 1882) – two students of Frédéric Chopin who are hardly known today, whose music is only recently being rediscovered. Weronika Chodakowska studied at the Chopin University of Music in Warsaw and the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin. She is one of the few pianists of her generation dedicated to rediscovering forgotten masterpieces of European piano literature. As the first pianist worldwide, she released two solo albums with works by Karol Mikuli, the most important student of Frédéric Chopin, including numerous world premiere recordings. Weronika Chodakowska combines artistic excellence, musicological research, and the passion to make extraordinary musical discoveries accessible to a broad audience. Her concert activities have taken her to numerous European countries, the USA, and Japan, where she completed an extensive tour with several dozen piano evenings in 2025. A joint event of Augustinum Heidelberg in collaboration with the Mannheim Institute for Medical Ethics, Psychotherapy, and Health Culture (IEPG).
