Description

Program:
Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach: Cantata "Die Grazien" Wq 200/22
Wolfgang Amadé Mozart: Rondo in A minor for solo fortepiano KV 511
Leopold Kozeluh: Cantata on Maria Theresia Paradis (Text: Pfeffel)
Maria Theresia Paradis: Fantasy in G major for solo fortepiano
Maria Theresia Paradis: Selected songs
Joseph Haydn: Canzonettas
Whether Maria Theresia Paradis really performed W. A. Mozart's piano concerto KV 456 in Paris, as the composer’s father noted, is questionable, but there is no doubt that they knew each other well. And just like Mozart, the young pianist also embarked on a three-year European tour – with her mother instead of her father. This fact alone is astonishing enough for a woman of the 18th century, but even more so when you know that Maria Theresia was blind from childhood. She must have been an extraordinary personality, trained musically in piano, organ, singing, and composition, with phenomenal hearing and memory. Led by a high pedagogical ethos, she established an institute for musical education in the center of Vienna in 1808, where blind and sighted girls could receive lessons in piano, singing, and music theory. Maria Theresia was familiar with or even friends with all the composers whose works are performed in this concert: Kozeluh was her highly revered composition teacher, she is said to have played all the piano concertos by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, and Haydn studied his oratorio "The Creation" with her. Dorothee Mields, soprano
Christine Schornsheim, fortepiano
