Description

The symphonic poem Manfred by Schumann, composed in 1851 after Byron, extends the dramatic universe of German Romanticism, between fever, dream, and disarray, in a free form that is as much theatrical as it is concert music. Elgar's Cello Concerto, premiered in 1919, was initially received with reservation before becoming one of the most admired pages of the repertoire, notably thanks to Jacqueline du Pré's legendary reading. Maximilian Hornung, laureate of the ARD Competition, deploys a broad tone, a very singing sense of line, and expressive depth. Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5, written in 1888, revisits themes of fate, resignation, and inner struggle. Victorien Vanoosten conducts the Neuchâtel Symphony Orchestra with attention to transitions, momentum, and clarity of sound plans.
