Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4, created in 1808, is one of the most unique works of its genre. Its ouverture, where the piano alone presents the theme before the orchestra enters, has often been seen as a revolution in concert writing. The Pastoral, an ode to nature, was also created in 1808 and belongs to the same historic Vienna evening as the Fifth Symphony. Mao Fujita, laureate of the Clara Haskil and Tchaikovsky competitions, displays a playing of great finesse. Daniele Gatti conducts the Swiss Romande Orchestra in a performance attentive to clarity, breathing, and contrasts. The evening becomes a portrait of Beethoven in his maturity, both focused, free, and visionary.
