Description

The displayed images tell the complex story of a river whose ecosystem has been profoundly transformed over the past two centuries: first through the channeling and exploitation of its waters for agricultural purposes, then by industrial expansion which, notably in the 1960s and 1970s, endangered its very existence. Today, alongside redevelopment projects and the desire to preserve the river ecosystem, industrial presence remains an integral part of the territory's identity. In the main hall of Casa Pessina, medium and large format photographs as well as monumental prints directly applied to the walls are presented in an irregular arrangement that evokes the flow and reflux of the river. In the side rooms, which house the permanent collection of sculptures by Apollonio Pessina, Piffaretti has chosen to dialogue his works with black and white photographs by Giovanni Luisoni (1944), a photographer from Stabio who has been documenting the same places explored by Controcorrente for years. Two perspectives and two sensitivities thus meet on the banks of the same river, revealing to the public the complexity and the unexpected charm of a constantly evolving territory.
