BERTILLE BAK. Voices from the Land

Description

The exhibition conceived in collaboration with the artist begins on the ground floor of Villa Vela and then unfolds in the rooms of the first floor. It engages in an stimulating dialogue with the permanent collection and especially with "Le vittime del lavoro" (The Victims of Work, 1882–83), a masterpiece from Vincenzo Vela's mature artistic work. Bertille Bak focuses on people, the significance of encounters, and the question of work in her research. Guided by mindfulness and empathy, she explores specific, forgotten, and marginalized communities whose daily lives she shares. Through this direct engagement, without a predetermined script, she creates an alternative narrative using media such as video, drawing, or installation. Beyond clichés and without pity, the artist presents complex realities from a new perspective and gives those affected the opportunity to tell their stories in sometimes subversive or even self-ironic ways. At the intersection of sociological documentation and fiction, realism and burlesque, she creates a "story factory" that reinvents everyday life and offers a form of poetic resistance against the harshness of reality. In the museum spaces, her works give Velas' "Victims of Work" a new interpretation and expand the meaning of the monument to contemporary reality and the question of work in a global and universal sense.
