Description

Gary, Indiana, is not Chicago. The city from which Jerrilynn Patton hails is a steel town – once the heart of American industry. Patton, who produces as Jlin, even worked in the steel mill before her music reached the world. Origin myth? Rather, context for music that chooses hardness and precision not just as an effect. Jlin comes from Chicago Footwork, a fast, hyper-rhythmic dance music. But she has long exploded the genre from within. Her principle: “I try to not only express myself, but literally do and not just say.” Her debut Dark Energy (2015) develops its own sound language, without samples and presets. Black Origami (2017) became one of the albums of the decade. Akoma (2024) brings together Björk, Philip Glass, and the Kronos Quartet – collaborations that show how far Jlin's rhythmic architecture extends: into contemporary composition, dance, minimalism. One of the most important voices in electronic music of the last ten years.
