Description
The Romanian dictatorship shaped me, even though I was only ten when Nicolae Ceausescu fell. Fear and control had pushed people out of the non-existent public space until that December 1989, including my family. The oligarchy that followed the collapse of the socialist system is a reflection of the helplessness of the slowly forming civil society to regain the public space. What does this have to do with Switzerland, with the rest of the world? I warn against the attempt to steer literature, for example through funding, regulations, and official training, and to despair. The immediate 'social' benefit must not — as in communism — become a criterion for evaluating art. My writing is always land acquisition. It aims at the unfirm.
