Description
Reading: Shenja Lacher
Moderation: Judith Heitkamp (in French) In France, it was celebrated as his best book to date: now literature star Emmanuel Carrère is visiting us with his great family saga. "Kolchose" (Matthes & Seitz // translated into German by Claudia Hamm) was internally called "Zusammengehörigkeit" among the Carrère family. In 2023, the mother, Hélène Carrère d’Encausse, the most famous Russia historian in France and chairwoman of the Académie française, dies, and shortly thereafter her husband Louis. While clearing out her apartment, Emmanuel discovers his father's records on the family tree, and he begins to trace the life, love, and suffering stories of four generations in Russia, Georgia, in exile in Germany, and in France: humorous, tender, and sometimes full of horror. How political history can suddenly overturn personal history becomes evident up to the present day, including the Ukraine war, the beginning of which Carrère witnessed in Moscow.
