Maria VMier. I follow the wind through the stone

Description

Based in Munich and New York, the artist Maria VMier (born 1985, Passau) is creating a new commissioned work that spans various locations within the Haus der Kunst. Inspired by oral traditions from staff members who have been working in the house for decades, VMier is working on-site on a constellation of interconnected artworks: a site-specific installation at the staff entrance, parasitic-looking sculptures, a new series of works on paper, and an artist's book produced specifically for this occasion. Central to Maria VMier's artistic practice is painting, which has evolved from writing gestures and diverse, idiosyncratic markings to complex formations that seem to be in constant motion. For VMier, painting is not only a place of embodiment or expression but also a practice of research, experience, and (re)learning. Her artistic activity includes context-specific and community-oriented works as well as installations, artist books, and objects. The focus of her work is the body as a tool of knowledge—a site of political engagement as well as joy. Recurring themes include the conditions of artistic work, the dynamics of power and desire, institutions as malleable structures, and engagement with nature, the invisible, and the unknown.
