Who begins playing the piano in kindergarten, composes his first opera at ten, and a pipe organ work at sixteen, is considered one of the most prominent pianists of his generation at nearly thirty. Bach's chorale preludes are artistic interpretations of evangelical church songs, originally composed for the organ and since the 19th century repeatedly arranged for the piano. Bach himself formulated the purpose of his music in the general bass doctrine of 1738: It should serve "to God's glory and recreation of the mind" – a phrase that applies equally to the chorale preludes and his secular music. Johannes Brahms turned to the organ again at the end of his life. The eleven chorale preludes were created in summer 1896, a few weeks after the death of Clara Schumann. Brahms himself died in April 1897. The selection of texts revolves around death and farewell; the style follows Bach's model and colors it with his own dense harmonic language. Six of the eleven pieces were arranged for piano by Ferruccio Busoni; they will be performed tonight in this arrangement. With Max Reger's variations and fugue on a theme by Johann Sebastian Bach, the circle closes. The theme is from Bach's cantata Auf Christi Himmelfahrt allein – namely, the aria Sein Allmacht zu ergründen, which gives the program its title. Reger develops fourteen variations and a final double fugue from it, whose contrapuntal density and harmonic boldness make it one of the central variation works for piano after Beethoven. Paul Hindemith called Reger the "last giant" of music – a word that is concretely audible here. About the soloist
Lukas Katter, born in Aschaffenburg, studied piano and new music at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln. He is currently continuing his education at the University of Vienna. The young chamber musician is a prizewinner of numerous competitions, has received several scholarships, and is supported among others by Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now. Therefore, this concert will impress you.
