Description
„The life of my grandfather is an interfamily cold case," says Judith Hermann. She traces the footsteps of this grandfather, who was stationed with the SS in Poland during World War II; she links her writing to his long-denied history and the relentless silence in the family. From Poland, she travels on to her sister in Naples and explores the memories and forgettings of subsequent generations. In nuances, Judith Hermann senses the repressed, the gaps — those who do not tell; those who remain silent; also those of our society. At the same time, she tells how fragile we set up our lives. Judith Hermann's debut Sommerhaus, später (1998) received extraordinary resonance. In 2003, the collection of stories Nichts als Gespenster followed; some stories were adapted into films. Her work has been awarded numerous prizes. For Wir hätten uns alles gesagt, based on the Frankfurt Poetics Lectures 2022, Judith Hermann received the Wilhelm-Raabe-Literaturpreis.
