Karlsruhe 1848: The inventor Carl von Sauerbronn returns from an expedition in Brazil – with a singing monkey: Julius. During the days of the Baden Revolution, the monkey becomes a symbol of freedom, reason, and dissent. While Sauerbronn tries to train the animal, his daughter Susanne teaches it to speak – and also to love. Revolutionaries, court officials, and an enthusiastic audience are captivated by this unusual trio story. A literary fun and a clever commentary on our present, told with wit, linguistic finesse, and a sense of the grotesque. Dr. Joscha Schaback studied, among other things, theater and music science and directing. He writes and translates opera librettos as well as texts for children's concerts; he also publishes reviews, essays, short stories, and narratives. The Monkey of Karlsruhe is his first novel.
