Description

A theatrical production by Theaterhaus Stuttgart AND NOW HANAU? How does it continue after the racially motivated terrorist attack on February 19, 2020, in Hanau, which has become ingrained in the collective memory of the Federal Republic? Nine people were murdered coldly and purely out of racist motives that evening, another man died in January 26 from the late effects of a gunshot wound. Ten lives, blindingly erased out of pure hatred. But reconstructing the events raises more questions than it provides answers. How could such a failure of organization of this magnitude occur? Why did locked emergency exits make escape impossible for the victims? Why was the emergency call center not sufficiently staffed? And why do the public prosecutor's office and police show obvious reluctance in clarifying the course of the crime? Questions posed by Tuğsal Moğul, a theater author, director, actor, and doctor born in 1969 in Neubeckum (Westphalia). Together with the initiative 19. Februar, an initiative of the victims' relatives and survivors, he addresses the events surrounding the night of the murder and gives a voice to those affected. Those who still faced bureaucratic confusion and xenophobic resentments. As part of a research project, Tuğsal Moğul and the initiative aim to create maximum transparency of a completely opaque event. They bring the reality to the stage in the form of documentary theater, thus creating a dignified remembrance of the act. It is about comprehensive clarification of the events and a critical examination of the actions of the authorities and police, as well as political consequences. And of course, it is about justice. For the victims and the bereaved. AND NOW HANAU aims to create a changed perspective on what happened and calls for a societal process of reflection and consequences. To bring this process to the wider public, the production team has developed a stage-reduced version of the Theaterhaus production, enabling guest performances on a larger scale. With this version, the Stuttgart ensemble will be guest at the Theater im Karlstorbahnhof Heidelberg on 02.10.26.
