PROGRAM Johann Sebastian Bach Mass in B minor (BWV 232) The original score of the B minor Mass by Johann Sebastian Bach is part of the UNESCO Memory of the World – alongside the Gutenberg Bible, the Nibelungenlied, and the Charter of Human and Civil Rights of the French Revolution. The work is rightly considered one of the most universal masterpieces in the history of music. 18 choral movements, nine arias, and the complete Latin text of the Catholic Mass come together here in a monumental composition that can also be read as a kind of musical legacy from Bach. He processes movements from earlier cantatas and combines them with new musical material. Bach is said to have worked on this jewel of his sacred music for more than 25 years. The work is also likely to hold a special place in the project of the J. S. Bach Foundation. Since 2006, the foundation has been performing a Bach cantata every month with the goal of presenting his entire vocal work within 25 years.
