Sir Simon Rattle called him "the most gifted pianist on the planet." In 1999, the multiple Grammy winner, pianist, and composer Rubalcaba was selected by Piano & Keyboard Magazine alongside artists like Glenn Gould, Martha Argerich, and Bill Evans as one of the great pianists of the 20th century. Born in 1963 in Havana into a musical family, Rubalcaba gained early stage experience, first as a drummer, later as a pianist. From a young age, he emerged in Cuba as an exceptional talent, was discovered by Dizzy Gillespie in 1985, and has since fascinated with brilliant technique, rhythmic sophistication, and lyrical expressiveness. He regularly collaborates with jazz greats such as Charlie Haden, Ron Carter, Joe Lovano, and Paul Motian. His playing is deeply rooted in Afro-Cuban tradition while continuously expanding the harmonic and sonic possibilities of jazz. In his solo concerts, he also reveals very intimate, delicate moments and dives deeply into the beauty of harmonies and melodies.
