Conversation & Reading: Kai Strittmatter & Karin Betz
Interpreter from Mandarin: Chang-Chen Tsao »›The Taiwan Diary‹ convinces both as a love story and as a sharp postcolonial novel.« (Jury of the International Booker Prize 2026) 1938: The Japanese writer Aoyama Chizuko travels to Taiwan at the invitation of the Japanese colonial administration. She has little regard for Japan's imperial plans; she wants to get to know the island – preferably while eating. The young Taiwanese Chizuru becomes her interpreter and travel companion – and proves to be a gifted cook. The Taiwanese writer Yáng Shuāng-zǐ combines culinary journey and bittersweet love with an exploration of colonial power. A sophisticated play with voices, languages, and truths – awarded the International Booker Prize 2026 (DuMont // translated into German by Karin Betz). We experience Yáng Shuāng-zǐ in conversation with her translator and China expert Kai Strittmatter (SZ). »Literature cannot fundamentally detach itself from politics.« (YÁNG SHUĀNG-Zǐ) ADMISSION: EURO 16.- / 10.-
