Illusions by Iwan Wyrypajew Two couples, two long and happy marriages – or not? What is true, what is illusion, and where does each life lie? After over 50 years of marriage, Danny wants to thank his wife Sandra: for her love and the happiness they shared, because true love is based on mutuality. Sandra does not get a word in, and after his speech, Danny dies content. But a year later, she confesses to Danny's best friend Alfred: she has not loved her husband, but only Alfred all along. Secretly, but happily. Alfred, in turn, now realizes that he – without knowing it – has loved Sandra all his life, not his wife Margret, which he confesses to her with all honesty. She then confesses to Alfred a lifelong affair with Danny. But that's just in fun. "Illusions" is the four-person play by the Siberian-born playwright Iwan Wyrypajew. The cast: two couples over 80, played by four actors around 30. In the end, nothing is certain – except death, and love is everywhere, except where you expect it. The Slovenian director Nina Rajić Kranjac was recently named by the magazine The Stage as one of the five most interesting emerging directors in Europe. In Bern, she will bring Wyrypajew's play about love and truthfulness, desire and happiness to the stage of the Vidmarhallen, marking her debut in German-speaking theater.
