After more than four years of imprisonment in various concentration camps, H. G. Adler was liberated in 1945 by American troops. He then dedicated himself to the task of comprehensively describing the prerequisites of mass murder: the actions of the multi-layered German bureaucracy from the Reich Security Main Office down to the village mayor and the largely "lukewarm and cowardly" behavior of the Germans, who participated "in the enjoyment of the values freed by the 'Solution' and 'Final Solution'" in an often insatiable manner. Looking to the future, Adler warned against treating people merely as "things," merely as "statistically analyzable factors" – not to govern people anymore, but only to manage them. Prof. Dr. Götz Aly described in 2025, with "How could this happen?", in detail the methods of rule of the National Socialists. On this evening, he will speak, based on Adler's book, especially about the deportation of the Heidelberg Jews.
