Description

In the play by dramatist Henrik Ibsen and his well-known generational piece from the 19th century, the past is full of ghosts that haunt us in the here and now, catch up with us, and bring us death. At least that's what Oswald, who sought his fortune as an artist in Paris, experiences in the eponymous play. His mother wanted to distance him from his origins and his violent father — yet both must realize in the end that Oswald has long carried the "seed of evil" within him and is doomed because of it. Can I even refuse an inheritance, free myself from it, and never look back again? Ghosts remain ghosts; they cannot be buried, they return whether we want them to or not. But perhaps we are also unfair to them if we collectively condemn all ghosts — maybe, considering the state of the world, they could be quite different ghosts, waving to us from more progressive and liberal times? What about the hard-won women's rights, the vibrant LGBTQIA+ community, the lush theater landscapes, the high taxes on high wages, disarmament after the Cold War, and the fundamental promise of peace? But can I really pick only the good spirits from my inheritance? Doesn't an inheritance also always include the negative ghosts that we are all too happy to overlook and repress? Rebekka David and her team delve deeply into Ibsen's original text and prepare to accept an inheritance and examine its relevance today.
