Description
In 30 years, over 7,000 applications from 64 countries and 237 winners – a proud record for the International Solo-Tanz-Theater Festival Stuttgart, founded in 1997 by dancer, choreographer, and educator Marcelo Santos. This year, young artists from China, Israel, and numerous European countries demonstrated impressively how much energy, innovation, and passion contemporary dance contains. Boldly and creatively, they addressed topics such as artificial intelligence, dealing with grief, societal expectations, and repeatedly questioned what identity is and how we locate it in society. The big winner of the evening was Swiss Liam Meier, who received two first prizes in the categories of dance and choreography. Other jury prize winners include Klil Ela Rotshtein from Israel, Ondine Malfoy from France, and Michele Simi from Italy, who also received the Public’s Final Choice Prize for the solo "Mickey" (Choreography: Adi Schwarz). The Public’s First Choice Prize and the DAF International Award went to Chinese Yingyu Lyu, and the TanzLabor ROXY from Ulm awarded a residency prize to Belgian Nina Plantefève-Castryck. The prizes for the categories of dance and choreography are endowed with between 1500 and 3500 euros and are sponsored by the city of Stuttgart and the Ministry of Science, Research, and the Arts of Baden-Württemberg. Additionally, there are two audience prizes sponsored by private sponsors with 500 EUR each, and work stipends from partner institutions such as the Dance Art Faculty in Rome. The jury for this year included choreographers Itzik Galili (Israel), Fernando Melo (Brazil), Olga Roriz (Portugal), dramaturg Lucy Van Cleef of the Stuttgart Ballet, and choreographer Erika Silgoner (Italy). The artistic director of the festival is the founder of the competition, Marcelo Santos. The award winners include Liam Meier (Switzerland): "Any (ID)ea?" 1st Prize Choreography and 1st Prize Dance: A piece about identity questioning the countless labels society wants to define us with, which distance us from the complexity of our true self. How do we get closer to the essence of who we really are? Klil Ela Rotshtein (Israel): "I Could Also Be a Black Swan" 2nd Prize Choreography and 3rd Prize Dance: The body – a living building where all the characters that reside within us live. Welcome to myself! The performer navigates between her different personalities, the outer and inner self, through text and movement. Ondine Malfoy (France): "I believe it because it’s absurd" 3rd Prize Choreography and Residency Prize "Bridges over the waves": The piece explores various dimensions of the absurd: the absurdity of movements, words, actions, and perhaps humanity as well. Michele Simi (Italy): "Mickey" Choreography: Adi Schwarz 2nd Prize Dance and Public’s Final Choice Prize: The piece pushes the technique of "Mickey Mousing," the perfect synchronization of movement and sound, to the limit. While the music tries to contain the dancer, the dancer tries to break free from control. Audience prize (First Choice) and DAF International Award: Yingyu Lyu (China) with "A Heavy Parting"
