Final works for the festival finale: The 8 Variations on "Ein Weib ist das herrlichste Ding" is Mozart's last major work of variations – it was created in his final year – and despite the rather trivial title, the variations are considered significantly more substantial and meaningful than many of his earlier variation cycles. As a musical contrast, Webern's variations from his last creative phase follow, which are more a combination of twelve-tone technique and variation, but should be played as if it were Bach, according to the composer. The Mozart Festival ends with Beethoven's last great piano work. Here too, the art of radically transforming a banal waltz theme into completely different, profound characters from parodic to sublime is demonstrated.
Florian Hölscher studied with Robert Levin, Michel Béroff, and Pierre-Laurent Aimard in Freiburg, Paris, and Cologne. He also received crucial impulses from conductor Peter Eötvös. His repertoire includes solo and chamber works from the 17th to the 21st century. He has been a guest at festivals such as Présences (Radio France, Paris), Eclat Stuttgart, the Salzburg Festival, Heidelberger Frühling, Lucerne Festival, and Kunstfestspiele Hannover-Herrenhausen since 2018. He holds a piano professorship at HfMDK Frankfurt.
