Description

The Piano, Trumpet, and Strings Concerto No. 1 by Shostakovich, composed in 1933, is one of his most original pages. The composer stages a tense and often ironic dialogue between the piano, trumpet, and string orchestra, with many stylistic allusions, from Beethoven to light music. Lucienne Renaudin-Vary, a young French trumpeter known for her ease across various repertoires, finds a role that is both virtuosic, theatrical, and highly flexible in tone. Fazıl Say opens the evening with his own concert piece, performed here as a Swiss premiere. Dvořák's Serenade for Strings, written in 1875, then provides a warm counterpoint, inspired by Bohemia. The Basel Chamber Orchestra presents a program that links contemporary invention, Soviet modernity, and Slavic lyricism with great texture finesse.
