Tar and Tombak are the traditional ensembles of Persian music. In combination with jazz, the shimmering, flowing sounds of centuries-old musical traditions with Elshan Ghasimi and Joss Turnbull become a sensitive and deeply felt meditation. A journey through time that connects the past and the present. Elshan Ghasimi is a virtuoso on the Persian long-necked lute Tar. At 17, she became the youngest member of the Iranian National Orchestra. She also deepened her studies in Iranian philosophy, literature, and poetry. Joss Turnbull is among the few percussionists who master the playing of the Persian goblet drum Tombak virtuously and also extend it spectacularly. He combines traditional techniques with hybrid sounds from rubber balls, springy fiberglass sticks, and live electronics – momentary, stirring, and highly sensitive.
