Donald | The Czar by Stefano Massini It is 12:37 PM on June 14, 1946. A young boy's bicycle is taken away, Golden Baby ­Donald J. is born, and a television enters the Trump household – the promise of a great future. A few years later, this Golden Boy suddenly understands the entire scope of the word field of power on a baseball field, and that every fire starts with a small spark. Around the same time in Leningrad: A small, thin boy learns martial arts. His goal: to break bones. His family also owns a television. But this is not something to boast about here. On the contrary, the father, a KGB employee, explains that it must be kept secret. From that moment on, young Vladimir Vladimirovich also wants to become an officer in this powerful apparatus. In his latest works DONALD and The Czar, Italian playwright Stefano ­Massini focuses on two equally dominant and conflicted figures of our present and describes them in iconic moments of their lives. They are the two most powerful men in the world: Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. But where did it all start? Where are the origins of this unyielding desire for power that is currently shaking our world? Both plays were created and premiered separately. In Bern, stage director Roger Vontobel narrates the rise of these two rulers in parallel, bringing to the German-speaking premiere two more works by Stefano Massini, following Eichmann – where the night begins.
