The Inseparables

Description

At the center of this story are two children who know each other from the windows of opposite high-rise buildings. Romain grows up in a world of absence, Sabah in a family with a migration background. In their shared imagination, the children invent their own language, a poetic space where closeness becomes possible.

However, the adult world increasingly intrudes into the children's fantasy world. Prejudices, racist labels, social tensions, and violence threaten to destroy the fragile friendship. When their fathers fight, Sabah and her family are torn from the neighborhood. The friendship ends abruptly, without farewell. Only years later does Romain, now an adult, try to find Sabah again. Fabrice Melquiot has written "Les Séparables," a highly poetic play about intercultural understanding, told from the perspective of memory: Two adult performers look back on a childhood where friendship was stronger than social labels.

Fabrice Melquiot's play was awarded the Grand Prix de Littérature dramatique Jeunesse and the German Children's Theatre Prize.
