In Dorothee Elmiger's new novel "Die Holländerinnen," personal memories, political history, and archaic natural images intertwine into a multi-voiced tapestry. A theater maker and his team embark on a dangerous quest for two women who disappeared years ago. They enter a vast, coordinate-free space illuminated only by a dim flashlight, confronting us mercilessly with the monstrous—our primal fears, intuitions, and experiences. The group encounters an impenetrable web of stories, loose ends, and sudden beginnings. Who has the power to tell stories? Which stories are told? And what does the stage say in response? Director Frieda Lange and her team explore these questions, immersing the audience with a sensual soundscape deep into the jungle of European conscience and projecting their own visions. With her award-winning novel (German Book Prize, Bavarian Book Prize, Swiss Book Prize), the Swiss author has struck a nerve of the times. Her literature, also suited for the stage, was already demonstrated in 2016 with the dramatization of "Schlafgänger" at Theater Basel.
