In no opera composition performed to date does the supernatural, mythical appear with such power and primal force as in Richard Wagner's "The Flying Dutchman," premiered in 1843 at the Royal Court Theatre in Dresden. Wagner portrays his protagonist as a desperate man whose former vigor has turned into its opposite – pure will to destroy. Lush instrumentation, rapidly changing tempos, bold harmonic turns, and bright chromatics characterize the explosive sharpness of the Dutchman, cursed to eternal wanderings, while the scenes of the sailor Daland, his daughter Senta, and the hunter Erik, who hopes for a future with Senta, are distinguished by an unusual wealth of melodies. When Senta stands before her father's pale guest, she recognizes him immediately: as a child, she studied the painting at home in the living room and heard the legend of the fate of the Dutch captain from her nurse Mary. In their encounter, not only two musical levels meet. Rather, two realities merge here.
