Demian The story of Emil Sinclair's youth by Hermann Hesse The future Nobel laureate Hermann Hesse was in a life crisis when, in 1917, he wrote Demian during a three-week writing frenzy and published it under the pseudonym Emil Sinclair. It describes his coming of age: experiencing humiliations, breaking the boundaries of his strict parental home, going through alcohol excesses, romanticizing a first love, and finally finding himself in a war hospital of the First World War. Alongside him, the older student Demian appears repeatedly, guiding and supporting him in his questions about a connection between good and evil and in his search for his own self. Because both know: Europe's collapse is imminent, and its rebirth requires new values. "In the end, even this youth only saw clearly what they did not want: the deep inner hypocrisy of this old, decaying societal culture," writes the reviewer Lulu von Strauss and Torney in 1922. With increasing success of his "Story of a Youth," Hesse was forced to reveal the pseudonym he had chosen "to prevent youth from being deterred by the well-known name of an old uncle," and which he still spoke from the heart.
