The Fatefulness

Description

A farmer's wife finds a lifeless body in the flax field. The shoes, rings, and moles are disturbingly familiar to her – she believes she recognizes herself in the dead. Shortly after, the lifeless body disappears. But the farmer's wife is sure: that was her lying there, and she must find out what her fate is. She doesn't quite fit into the village fabric: the farmer's wife on the small farm with the flax field, which is covered with blue flowers before harvest time. She was not always a farmer's wife, and her husband was not always a farmer – until his younger brother died, he was his servant. The flax field is a remnant from the years when she cultivated her own dowry, but also from a much longer past when flax cultivation was an important economic sector. Is the death connected to her origin, her status? To the affection she feels for her neighbor? Or does she carry an entirely different, much older legacy within her that becomes her doom? As a house playwright at the Lucerne Theatre in the 2025/26 season, Swiss author Yael Inokai wrote her first theater text with "The Fatefulness." This text was created as part of the Stücklabor Basel. For her latest novel "A Simple Intervention," Yael Inokai, who currently lives in Berlin, received the Anna Seghers Prize and the Clemens Brentano Prize. A new novel will be published in autumn 2026 by Hanser Verlag Berlin.
