Theater Glarus performs "Dr Franzoos im Chlüntel" (De Franzos im Ybrig)

Description

Information about the play We are in the year 1798. Revolutionary France marches into the Swiss Confederation, spreading fear and terror. The men, intoxicated by their own courage, decide to climb the mountains and stop the enemy troops with an avalanche of ice, stones, and snow. The women stay behind and have to take care of the village and everyday life alone. They initially rely on a different kind of resistance: dirty and unwashed, they want to scare off the French so that they move on and spare the village. But instead of an army, only a single Frenchman appears – Foulon, a charming, lively French battle painter. The women, previously "among themselves," discover zest for life, eroticism, and new perspectives, while the men freeze on the mountain waiting for the supposed enemy. In 1991, Thomas Hürlimann wrote the dialect comedy "Franzos im Ybrig," which was later also performed at the Schauspielhaus Zurich. Theater Glarus relocated the setting to the Glarus Klöntal – here too, the French have marched in. The play mixes colorful, fiery, and lively historical events with exaggerated characters and situations. At its core, it is about foreignness and encounter: How do people react to the unknown – with fear, defense, or curiosity? And how do roles change when familiar structures suddenly disappear?
