Description
At the heart of The High Seas, Caitlín Nic Gabhann, virtuoso of the concertina and dancer, brings to the stage the light grace and rhythmic energy of sean-nós. This ancient dance, close to step dancing through footwork, is distinguished by greater freedom, where improvisation plays a key role and the body becomes a true musical instrument.
The ensemble features music rooted in Irish traditions. The strongly rhythmic bowing of the Donegal region, in northwest Ireland, closely linked to dance, interacts with Gaelic songs from Gaoth Dobhair, one of the major centers of Irish culture, and with more restrained moments, close to storytelling.
With The High Seas, music, dance, and singing do not simply follow each other but respond and intertwine continuously. Instruments come alive, dance emerges, voices tell stories: between instrumental pieces, foot taps, and singing, an intimate and embodied Ireland is revealed. Caitlín Nic Gabhann: concertina (small diatonic accordion), sean-nós dance
Ciarán Ó Maonaigh: fiddle
Cathal Ó Curráin: bouzouki (lute), singing
Dermot Mulholland: double bass, singing
