Padilla - Altitude - creation commissioned by the NEC L. v. Beethoven - Symphony No. 9 in D minor, op. 125 With Altitude, for five soloists and symphonic orchestra, Abril Padilla does not see the orchestra as a musical machine but as an organism made of daily gestures. Sounds from La Chaux-de-Fonds intermingle, and in fragments, Beethoven's Ninth emerges: first distorted, it gradually surfaces until it is reconstituted. It is then presented in its entirety. The orchestra alone, three movements without voices; then a man stands up and declares: "O Freunde, nicht diese Töne!" Behind this voice, the entire choir aspires to joy, but it eludes them: Beethoven seeks it, loses it, distorts it into a military march, elevates it into prayer. The choir — 180 choristers — becomes a collective figure, a "we" that Beethoven brings into a space where, before him, no human voice had a place.
