Michael Pöhlmanns Chamber Jazz Quartet is always good for a surprise: seemingly effortlessly, it can transition from power play in the best hard bop tradition to chamber music of four equal voices. Stories are staged that carry the music to the audience. Bass legend Steve Swallow also praised the compositions of the bandleader for their "graceful harmonic motion." Firmly rooted in the jazz tradition, they draw from many sources: the symphonic ambition of Charles Mingus seems to appear, Ellington's harmonic freedom, the strictness of Astor Piazzolla — and even a melody of Romanticism in Franz Schubert's "Montuno."
