Description
Burattini are traditional Italian hand puppets that originated in the 16th century and are inspired by the character 'Burattino' from the Commedia dell’arte. The Swiss Puppet Theatre Museum houses a collection of Burattini, including a set bequeathed by the family of the Ticinese collector Plinio Grossi (1924–2012). These pieces testify to a tradition that is still very much alive in Northern Italy.The Fantoccini, small puppets moved by strings, wires, or mechanisms, also confirm Italian creativity in another very popular tradition.
