Description

A vibrant art installation with expressive wooden figures makes the Reformation upheavals in Kappel 500 years ago tangible and invites reflection on freedom of belief as the foundation of modern Switzerland. In January 1523, the nearly 19-year-old Heinrich Bullinger accepted the position offered by Abbot Wolfgang Joner as a teacher at the Kappel monastery. With him, the humanist and reformist spirit quickly spread among the monks and in the region – from the beginning in German. On March 29, 1526, they celebrated the Lord's Supper in the reformed way for the first time and laid down their monastic habits. In 1527, they handed over the monastery to the city of Zurich. What happened 500 years ago sparked the curiosity of artist Peter Leisinger. Since late summer 2025, various wooden figures have been created. Tired monks, lively students, the dialog-ready Abbot Joner, critical councilors, Bullinger as a boy or apprentice or scholar: all have strong expressions and invite interaction. One feels like communicating with them. Back then, it was infinitely important what seems quite natural to us today, namely that every person can believe what they want. This was discussed and negotiated – after bloody fights – in the 4 Kappel Land Peace agreements. A cornerstone for modern Switzerland.
