The beginning of the Early Modern Period (16th/17th century) is an important but little-known era of the city-state of Solothurn, which significantly shaped our society today. The magnificently dressed lady Maria Angulata-Egger tells of this time - an era that encompasses architecture, music, dance, medicine, and culinary arts.
The philosophers and scientists are driven by humanism. The people of this time begin to think independently and act on their own. Humanists promote new ideas but are not fanatics.
Humanistically educated politicians travel across Europe. The streets are dusty or marshy. At night, progress is impossible. However, communication is no problem, as all educated people speak fluent Latin and mostly also Ancient Greek. By 1546, Solothurn has 5 schools. In 1595, education becomes compulsory, and poor citizens' sons are funded through the alms fund. Books have been printed for some time now. Solothurn possesses valuable libraries. Antiquity and history are being rediscovered. "Nowhere else do you get better advice for the future than from the past," says the learned city clerk Hans-Jakob vom Staal. The concept of the Dark Ages emerges. A lively correspondence is maintained with Zwingli, and the church is questioned. Copernicus discovers the law of planetary motion. Leonardo da Vinci, Kepler, and Galileo realize that the Earth is not the center of the universe. Can the biblical world model still be taken seriously?
Solothurn seeks proximity to France. The ambassador finds here a suitable accommodation. Courtly life takes hold in Solothurn.
