Description

Thanks to its economic power and scientific and technological progress, the bourgeoisie of Central Europe becomes the leading social force. This new bourgeois self-awareness finds its expression primarily in high culture. Especially narrative literature is the ideal means to engage with bourgeois thinking, bourgeois desires, bourgeois values, and bourgeois ways of life. In the countries of Europe, the great narratives are now emerging that continue to shape our image of that era. In the German-speaking world, Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, Theodor Storm, Wilhelm Raabe, Friedrich Hebbel, and Theodor Fontane become the authors who make the feeling of life of this time comprehensible to us. The social grievances of industrialization in the two decades before the turn of the century become the subject of a critical view of the living reality of the working class for a new generation of authors like Arno Holz, Johannes Schlaf, and Gerhart Hauptmann. Engelbert Reul was born in 1953 in the Rhineland. After graduating from high school (Latin - Greek) in 1972, he studied German studies and philosophy at the University of Bonn. From the winter semester of 1974/75, he continued his studies at the University of Freiburg in Uechtland. In the fall of 1981, he completed his university studies with a thesis on the poetry of the late Karl Wolfskehl. From August 1981 to June 2017, he was a teacher at the Kollegium Spiritus Sanctus Brig for German and philosophy (also temporarily for history and art history) and was the director of the student theater Brig for 26 years. In addition, he engaged in various cultural activities.
