«Passage Simplon»

Description

The Stockalper Castle Museum presents, on the ground floor of the castle, the exhibition « Passage Simplon », which traces, over an area of about 200 m², the eventful history of the Simplon Pass, structured into seven themes. The achievements in transportation, such as the construction of the Simplon tunnel or the operation of the national road crossing the pass, are presented as vividly as the first crossing of the Alps by plane, from Brig to Domodossola, carried out by Geo Chavez (1887–1910) in 1910, or the revolutionary invention of the first asphalt coating for road construction by Brig doctor and adventurer Guglieminetti (1862–1943). A special room is dedicated to the famous project manager of the castle domain, Kaspar Stockalper vom Thurm (1609–1691), who gained wealth, fame, and honor as a politician and entrepreneur with multiple activities. The visit to the exhibition is free.
