Visions of the Future – In the 2023/24 season, century pianist Daniil Trifonov attracted international attention when he presented Beethoven's famously notorious Hammerklavier Sonata from the Salzburg Festival Hall to New York's Carnegie Hall. The amazement at the transparency, lightness, and ease with which he revealed new facets of this colossus was echoed in the press. The gala concert of the Albert Concerts in the Beethoven Year 2027 focuses on the forward-looking nature of a composer whose thinking was far ahead of his time. 200 years after Ludwig van Beethoven's death, it is not the past that is evoked, but the present and impact of his music that is made audible. Together with the Berlin Baroque Soloists and under the direction of Gottfried von der Goltz, a program is created that illuminates Beethoven's development in the context of his time – between tradition, appropriation, and reinvention. Trifonov plays on the historic Hammerklavier, which inspired Beethoven to an expanded understanding of dynamics and expression. The path to the future always led through the inherited: the program also features Mozart as well as the Bach sons Johann Christian, Wilhelm Friedemann, and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. However, Beethoven's pioneering spirit extends far beyond the piano. In the Große Fuge op. 133 – at the gala concert in Beethoven's string arrangement, in the chamber music cycle in the original quartet version – he condenses his thinking radically: from a thematic core, the entire work unfolds. Thus, the Große Fuge becomes one of the boldest and most visionary designs of his work – a preview of the future that impressively confirms the title of our Beethoven gala concert. Program:

General Information

The concert of the Berlin Baroque Soloists takes place at the Freiburg Concert Hall and highlights Beethoven's influence on music history. In addition to Beethoven, works by Mozart and the Bach sons are also presented to illustrate the development of music in the context of his time.
