String Quartet in C-sharp Minor op. 131 Sudbrackmusik A whole year in the sign of the master 2027 marks the two-hundredth anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven's death – an occasion for a Beethoven year that also makes up for what the pandemic claimed seven years earlier: the worldwide celebrations for his 250th birthday. Beethoven's sixteen string quartets trace the composer's development with rare clarity. The early quartets op. 18 (1798–1800) show the engagement with Haydn and Mozart and the emergence of a unique language. Twenty-five years later, in the late quartets, the completely deaf Beethoven creates a sound world without precedent. The C-sharp minor quartet op. 131 connects seven movements seamlessly, following dense counterpoint with a floating dance movement and placing a long variation movement in the center. These late works are still considered highlights of the quartet repertoire – complex, demanding, and at times enigmatic. In contrast are Erwin Schulhoff's Five Pieces for String Quartet (1923), dedicated to Darius Milhaud. Schulhoff, one of the most colorful voices of the Prague and Berlin avant-garde, combined jazz, twelve-tone technique, and quarter-tone experiments. After the German occupation in 1939, he was persecuted as a communist, Jew, and representative of 'degenerate' music; arrested in Prague in 1941, he died in the Wülzburg camp in 1942. The Five Pieces stand long before this break – pointedly short, arranged like a suite, each movement a dance miniature: Viennese waltz, Italian serenade, Czech dance, Argentine tango, Southern Italian tarantella. Founded in 2009 in Frankfurt am Main, the Aris Quartet is among the most distinguished string quartets of its generation. Prizes at the Mozart Competition Salzburg, the ECHO Klassik 2018, and selection as BBC New Generation Artists 2016–2018 mark the path of an ensemble that regularly performs at Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, and Elbphilharmonie today.
