Description
Discoveries in Hietzing: From Josef Lackner's brutalist church to Karl Schartelmüller's superblock as a garden city. Hietzing is a district full of gems. Some are well-known, others less so. The range of what the area between the Lainzer Tiergarten and the Schönbrunn Palace Garden has to offer is evident on a walk to two outstanding architectural jewels. For example, Josef Lackner's engagement with the questions of church construction in the 1960s is manifested in the reinforced concrete cube of the Memorial Church Lainz-Speising, which with its four entrances symbolically stands for openness to all people. After an interior visit to the church, a short walk to the Lockerwiese settlement – with over 750 housing units the second-largest garden settlement in Vienna – further illustrates the special type of a superblock as a garden city.
