Description

Tony Kushner's eponymous play, on which this opera is based, was a huge Broadway success. It leads into America of the late 1980s, marked by wild zest for life but also overshadowed by the AIDS epidemic. The opera paints a vivid picture of the main characters with their intense relationships and tension-filled emotions.

The characters of this station drama are connected by the deep human need for connection with existential experiences of fear, guilt, and loneliness. At the center is the terminally ill and abandoned by his partner Prior Walter, whose fever dreams turn into threatening angelic visions until he ultimately finds great inner strength. Despite the serious theme, Eötvös' score is imbued with subtle humor; floating soundscapes, everyday noises, and Broadway sounds create a captivating effect.
