The Genius Haydn
After two stays in London (1791-1792, 1794-1795), which established him as the most renowned composer of his time, J. Haydn took up his position as Kapellmeister with the Esterházy family and composed a series of six masses that mark the peak of classical aesthetics while also anticipating Romanticism. The Zurich Sing Academy and the Basel Chamber Orchestra, conducted by René Jacobs, present two of these masses: the Missa in angustiis, better known as the Nelson Mass (in homage to Admiral Nelson, the victor of the Battle of Trafalgar), and the Theresienmesse (referring to Empress Maria Theresa, who allegedly sang the solo soprano part).
