It was invented in Switzerland, tourism in the form we know today as travel for pleasure, about 180 years ago. The consumption of perceived pristine nature and spectacular landscapes required the technical infrastructure of the industrial revolution: the steam engine, the Grand Hotel, and photography. The pre-made images of longing in the 'foreign industry', as it was called in the 19th century, shape the desire for travel as a major change and personal fulfillment to this day – along with the contradictions they generate. Complaints about the destruction of the original by enthusiastic visitors have accompanied tourism in Switzerland from the beginning, as well as discomfort with the hectic acceleration it causes. What can we learn from this? The number of participants is limited – online reservations take precedence.
