The craftsmen's guilds provided the politicians and governed, the brotherhoods were more responsible for church and social matters and prayed. In Solothurn, there were 11 guilds - the origin of the "Holy Solothurn Number"! But what did they do with the citizens who practiced the war craft as their main profession?
Since the 14th century, members of related crafts in cities formed guilds. This allowed them to protect their common interests: set training regulations, eliminate unwanted competition, support each other in undeserved distress, exchange experiences, and achieve political power.
In Solothurn, there were 11 guilds – a legacy still visible in the cityscape today!
Originally, every citizen had to belong to the guild of their craft. Guild members gathered in their guild houses, some of which can still be clearly recognized today.
The city brotherhoods organized masses and memorial services at the altars they endowed in the churches.
The brotherhood system still thrives in Solothurn today: “Every year a gala feast and a good wine...” – this is how we celebrate these occasions!
