The Hoffmeister Quartet interprets works by composers who brought the genre of the string quartet from Vienna to the metropolises of Eastern Europe. Lemberg (Polish: Lwów – Ukrainian: Lviv), today the most important city in western Ukraine, was around 1800 the capital of the Crown land of Galicia and Lodomeria in the eastern periphery of the Habsburg Empire. Joseph Elsner, originating from Silesia (1769–1854), came to Lemberg after his musical training in Vienna as a conductor at the Lemberg Theater, which was then performed by a German and a Polish troupe. At the same time, he established himself here as a composer of chamber music, which he wrote for the musical elites of the city. Later, he moved to Warsaw, where he worked as a teacher for an entire generation of Polish composers and singers. Franz Gebel (1787–1843), also from Silesia, worked in various cities of the Habsburg crown lands after his training in Vienna, including Lemberg, until he went to Moscow in 1817. Here, he worked as a music educator and organizer of music evenings, where the chamber music of the Viennese classics was especially promoted. Anton Ferdinand Titz (1742?–1810) was already active as a violin virtuoso at the imperial court in St. Petersburg from the 1780s. He was considered a student of Joseph Haydn and founded the tradition of the string quartet in the Russian Empire.
