The work of the piano tuner is essential for any concert and opera operation, but it takes place behind closed doors without public access. The pursuit of perfect tuning, like many things in life, necessarily results in compromise due to external conditions. This was already recognized by music theorist Andreas Werckmeister, who in the late 17th century worked through the pitfalls of equal temperament tuning and sought to bring order to the matter. Werckmeister's cryptic philosophical texts and compositions from Schütz to Charles Ives form the starting point for the music theater creation of Swiss theater maker Thom Luz.
