Description

Joschka Fischer's lecture was postponed from 25.09.26 to 03.10.26 for organizational reasons. Already purchased tickets remain valid. Lecture with a signing session afterwards. The USA are no longer the reliable protectorate that Germany could rely on for decades. This raises a question that has long been suppressed: What role does and must this country take on in a world that is changing faster than the old Federal Republic was used to? The rivalry between the great powers is intensifying, artificial intelligence is transforming economy and society, the global south is asserting itself more confidently, Europe is under military pressure. In his lecture, Joschka Fischer places this situation in a broader historical context. Germany remains the third-largest industrial nation in the world, but at the same time, a country whose relationship with power, military, and national self-understanding is still shaped by the catastrophe history of the 20th century. Can a post-national Germany survive in an increasingly dangerous world? Is economic strength enough when technological sovereignty, defense capability, and political resolve need to be renegotiated? Germany must clarify what responsibility means today. The trust that its former war opponents placed in it after 1945 was the prerequisite for Germany's resurgence. Former Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer shows what it means today to continue to live up to this trust and at the same time bravely face the completely new threats of the 21st century – militarily, technologically, and politically. Joschka Fischer, born in 1948 in Gerabronn, was Federal Foreign Minister and Vice Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1998 to 2005. From 1994 to 2006, he was a member of the German Bundestag. In 2006/07, he was a visiting professor at Princeton University. He lives in Berlin and has published numerous books on German and international politics, Europe, and the new world order.
